Scaling impact in emerging markets through debt financing.

May 11, 2026

As startups mature, their funding needs evolve. While early-stage equity is vital for initial growth, relying on it for long-term expansion becomes expensive and dilutive.

Despite their potential, many high-impact enterprises find themselves trapped in a “missing middle.” They have outgrown microfinance but aren’t yet large enough to attract major Development Finance Institutions (DFIs). This has created a $453 billion debt gap for creditworthy enterprises across Global Innovation Fund (GIF) priority markets.

GIF recently hosted a webinar to explore the financing gap and a new offering for scaling enterprises: GIF Growth.

The challenge: creditworthy but lacking capital

There are an estimated 882,000 growth-stage impact enterprises actively seeking capital. While 60% of these are considered creditworthy by conventional metrics, the market isn’t meeting their needs:

  • Misaligned products: Existing loans often feature short tenors, zero moratoriums, and ticket sizes that are either too small to move the needle or too large to access.
  • Rigid collateral requirements: Traditional lenders often rely on heavy physical collateral rather than assessing the strength of the business model.
  • Perceived risk vs. reality: A lack of locally adapted debt products means risk is often priced based on market perception rather than actual performance.

The webinar highlighted a significant disparity in the debt capital landscape.

Introducing GIF Growth: a bridge to scale

Launched in 2025 GIF Growth is a $100 million purpose-built blended finance vehicle. Its mission is clear: to bridge the financing gap entrepreneurs are facing in emerging markets and save and improve the lives of over 100M people in low and middle income countries.

How GIF Growth is redefining lending:

  • Tailored financing: offers $1–10 million tickets with flexible repayment structures matched to business cash cycles.
  • Non-traditional collateral: Moves beyond rigid collateral to price risk accurately, focusing on impact-oriented business models
  • Blended capital structure: Utilises a first-loss layer, including a DFI guarantee providing 50% principal protection, and concessional capital anchored by the UK’s FCDO, to de-risk the investment for private sector partners.
  • Building lasting capacity: A $1 million KOICA-funded technical assistance programme helps innovators deepen their impact and de-risk their business, to graduate to commercial lenders.

Impact in action: portfolio highlights

During our webinar we heard from two GIF Growth portfolio companies, demonstrating how right-sized debt is catalysing their scale:

4G Capital

4G Capital is a market leading fintech providing ethical and sustainable financial services to micro enterprises in Africa. GIF Growth’s $2 million loan will support the company’s effort to scale their credit to both new and existing clients.

“The ideal impact investor is someone who understands the market, understands the reality of the problem that we as an enterprise are trying to solve and has the same restless ambition to solve that problem.”

Wayne Hennessy-Barrett, Founder and Executive Chairman of 4G Capital.

GreenTeams

GreenTeams delivers end-to-end air quality and emissions monitoring solutions. GIF Growth’s $1 million dollars played a critical role in the company’s ability to manage their working capital needs so that they can apply for more government contracts to expand their air quality and response coverage.

"GIF's support has led to accelerated growth and enabled GreenTeam to support both government to monitor air polution and private companies to fulfill their goals of operating in a more environmentally-friendly manner”

Wilson Sutarko, CEO of Green Teams

Our partners include mission-aligned government development agencies, foundations, and private donors.

To reach our goal we are seeking additional partners who believe in scaling the world’s most promising innovations. Stay tuned for our upcoming fundraising announcement.
