Global Innovation Fund announces $50M+ Capital Raise for GIF Growth.

Jul 17, 2026

The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is pleased to announce a major milestone in its mission to scale high-impact innovations in emerging markets. GIF has secured $50 million in funding through its permanent, blended finance vehicle, GIF Growth, from a blend of government and private investors.

GIF Growth addresses a persistent structural failure in international development finance: the “missing middle.” Many growth-stage impact companies struggle to secure the right-sized debt financing required to scale. Despite creditworthiness and outsized social potential, these companies are often deemed too risky for commercial lenders. Data reveals extensive unmet demand, with an estimated 882,000 growth-stage impact enterprises across many of GIF’s priority markets actively seeking capital.

To bridge this financing gap, GIF Growth utilises a highly catalytic blended finance structure designed to de-risk investments and mobilise commercial capital. By combining concessional capital from governments with private investors, the vehicle provides significant downside protection, proving that growth-stage impact lending is both financially viable and returnable.  Through this structure, GIF Growth offers entrepreneurs right-sized debt financing, with ticket sizes of $1 million to $10 million and instruments and products which meet the needs of these businesses.

Wayne Hennessy-Barrett, Founder and Executive Chairman of 4G Capital, GIF Growth portfolio company said:

“The ideal impact investor is someone who understands the market, understands the reality of the problem that we as an enterprise are trying to solve and has the same restless ambition to solve that problem. Through GIF Growth’s investment, 4G Capital now has a partner that brings exactly that kind of aligned ambition and strategic support to our next phase of scale.”

Key backers in this funding round include:

  • The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO): Providing vital anchor funding to seed the strategy.
  • Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida): Provides a critical portfolio guarantee to substantially mitigate investor risk and attract private sector investment.
  • Global Affairs Canada: Is a vital patient anchor investor helping to initiate GIF Growth’s launch and mobilise further capital.
  • Banca Etica: Italy’s first and only cooperative bank entirely dedicated to ethical finance and a critical private sector contributor to GIF Growth.
  • Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA): Funding a dedicated Technical Assistance programme to strengthen portfolio enterprises, further driving down perceived risk
  • This Day: a charitable foundation building a fairer future for new generations and providing valuable philanthropic capital in innovative ways.

Backed by global leadership in blended finance

The Honourable Randeep Sarai, Canada’s Secretary of State (International Development), said:

“Sustainable development succeeds when innovative financing supports strong businesses and makes meaningful differences in people’s lives.

Canada’s investment in GIF Growth will help scale high-impact innovations, ensuring that new businesses can attract the private capital they need to build inclusive, climate-resilient, and prosperous economies.”

Kjell Forsberg,  Deputy Director General and Head of Department for trade, private sector and financial instruments at Sida said:

“To meet massive global challenges, international aid must become more cost-effective, innovative, and catalytic. Through our guarantee for GIF Growth, Sida’s partnership will provide the risk-mitigation to mobilise private capital, empower companies to scale, and improve lives.”

Aldo Soldi, President, Banca Etica, commented:

“Banca Etica’s ongoing commitment to ethical finance aims to drive meaningful positive changes to social and economic inclusion, environmental protection and innovation. Our investment is designed to help GIF Growth to catalyze further private capital to meet these aims.”

Gary Lubner, Founder of This Day Foundation, said:

“Too many of the most promising businesses tackling poverty, inequality and climate resilience in emerging markets are unable to access the investment they need to grow.

By bringing together public, private, and philanthropic capital, GIF Growth is tackling that critical gap in the market by backing ambitious, high-impact entrepreneurs and organisations with the potential to improve millions of lives.

We are delighted to support this mission to create lasting change.”

Impact at scale: Climate and gender lens investing

With over $50 million in funding secured, GIF Growth is over halfway on its goal to raise up to $100 million over the coming years, to save and improve the lives of over 100 million people in emerging markets over the next decade.

“High-impact enterprises in emerging markets hold the keys to solving some of our planet's most urgent challenges, yet they are systematically starved of the growth capital they need to scale,” said Avinash Mishra, Global Innovation Fund’s Chief Investment Officer and Head of GIF Growth.

“GIF Growth is designed specifically to dismantle this barrier. By deploying smart, concessional, and right-sized capital, we aren't just funding companies, we are de-risking entire ecosystems and proving to the broader financial market that impact investing in emerging markets is a viable, high-return proposition.”

The evergreen fund will invest cross-sectorally with an unyielding focus on social impact, prioritising climate resilience and gender equality outcomes.

In addition to financial support, GIF Growth will provide comprehensive Technical Assistance, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), to improve enterprise resilience and build lasting market capacity.
